Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that may affect 30 percent or more of all soldiers who have experienced combat. Other people who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events, including child abuse, criminal assaults such as rape, terrorist acts, automobile accidents, and airplane crashes, may also suffer from PTSD. | Thomson Healthcare, Inc. EMDR for Post-Traumatic Stress and Trauma
I FIRST HEARD about EMDR therapy back in the 90s when I was doing my daily radio show on the (sadly) now-defunct Eyada.com. I interviewed someone who practiced it, and frankly, I thought it was a little kooky. Well, it's not.
(PTSD), the association gave EMDR therapy its "highest level of recommendation" for the treatment of trauma. | Shannon Brownlee See book keywords and concepts | First, the company tried encouraging doctors to prescribe the drug off label for post-traumatic stress disorder by funding and publishing several clinical trials testing Paxil on people suffering from the condition. Unfortunately for SmithKline, however, the results of the trials failed to show the drug was effective, and the FDA refused to approve it for posttraumatic stress disorder. The company then turned to another condition, called social anxiety disorder, an extreme form of shyness that causes intense feelings of distress in social situations. | Charles Barber See book keywords and concepts | The "shell shock" of the survivors of World War I led to some novel treatments (some innovative and compassionate, others as horrific as the war itself), as well as the rise of the "mental hygiene" movement of the 1920s and 1930s; the experience of Vietnam veterans led direcdy to the entry of posttraumatic stress disorder into the revised psychiatric diagnostic manual in 1980; and a considerable amount of the news coverage of the Iraq War has addressed the (deteriorating) mental status of the troops, with calls for more assessment, treatment, and general vigilance for their fragile psyches. | Jack Challem See book keywords and concepts | Psychological Tips
Post-traumatic stress disorder is serious. The earlier it is treated, however, the quicker a person's recovery is likely to be. Treatment should include psychological counseling (talk therapy), nutrition, supplements, and medications when appropriate. Counseling may entail exposure therapy to relive the experience and to dull the response to memories of it. | Dr. Arthur Janov See book keywords and concepts | A repeated lack of love experienced early in life can produce the illness known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A key effect of PTSD is the damage that is done to the corpus callosum, which reduces a person's ability to connect to her feelings; or, literally, for the left brain to connect to the right. In an article in Scientific American, Martin Teicher of the Harvard Medical School describes his finding that young boys who had been abused or rejected had significantly smaller corpus callosums than normal children. | Thomson Healthcare, Inc. The only problem for SmithKline was that social anxiety disorder was a puny market, especially compared with depression. | James Dowd and Diane Stafford See book keywords and concepts | This family of disorders also includes depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, chronic fatigue, and substance abuse syndromes. In many of these patients, some psychological trauma early in life (typically before age thirty) is the root cause of ASD.
ASD is associated with a common set of symptoms and several common biochemical features such as mood disturbance, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain. These people's brain chemistry shows chronic activation of the hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA). | Marshall Editions See book keywords and concepts | DIAGNOSIS
The term post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is used to describe a range of psychological symptoms that may result from experiencing or witnessing a traumatic or life-threatening event, such as a natural disaster or military combat. Other incidents that can trigger this disorder include road accidents, muggings, and sexual or physical assaults. It can also occasionally follow a particularly difficult childbirth. Most survivors of trauma will go on to live normal lives once time has passed, but for others, just hearing news of shattering events can have a lasting impact. | | See Post-Traumatic stress disorder for information on their use (p. 875).

DIAGNOSIS
A tic is a rapid and repeated contraction of a group of muscles, which results in movement (a motor tic) or the production of a sound (a vocal tic). Motor tics usually involve the muscles of the face (especially around the eye), head, and neck, producing movements such as blinking, facial twitching, and shrugging of the shoulders. They can, however, affect other parts of the body. Common vocal tics include grunting and clearing the throat. | | For example, for people who are going through nicotine withdrawal, Asian ginseng might be a good choice (see Post-Traumatic stress disorder for more information on Asian ginseng, p. 875). For others, a slightly more calming tonic such as American ginseng or rhodolia might be more suitable. As mentioned above, check with a medical herbalist to determine which herbs will be most useful for your specific condition.

PANIC ATTACKS
DIAGNOSIS
Panic attacks are feelings of intense fear and anxiety that come on without any warning, and often have no apparent trigger. | Charles Barber See book keywords and concepts | Additionally, imaging studies of patients diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder found that psychotherapy increased prefrontal metabolism and decreased limbic system activation in the brain.
In broad terms, this means that psychotherapy enhanced activity in the part of the brain associated with executive function—judgment, decision-making, rationality—and subdued activity in the part of the brain that processes emotion, fear, and aggressive instincts. For people suffering from PTSD, this would appear to be a good thing.
Psychotherapy affects serotonin metabolism in the brain. | | Posttraumatic stress disorder led the way, accounting for almost half of all diagnoses, followed by anxiety, adjustment disorders, depression, and substance abuse disorders.)28 In the aftermath of each of those events, there has been extensive media coverage, discussion, and debate about the mental health of the victims.
The fascination with and curiosity about antidepressants and depression on the part of the American public remains profound and unabashed. Based on Internet searches, antidepressants are much on the mind of Americans. | | CBT has also been used with an impressively high degree of effectiveness for a dizzying number of conditions—among them, bulimia, hypochondriasis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder, even as a proven means of reducing criminal behavior. Cognitive-behavioral treatments have been shown in analyses to reduce criminal recidivism by 25 percent.10 One can only imagine the hype that would surround a pill if it was found to reduce criminal behavior at such a rate. | Gerald E. Markle and Frances B. McCrea See book keywords and concepts | For example, anxiety neurosis became a number of discreet disorders, including social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PSTD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder. At the same time, the diagnosis of "neurosis" was eliminated, the word itself disappearing entirely from the newer volumes. DSM-IV, published in 1996, continued to emphasize differential diagnosis, as did DSM-IV-TR (text revision), published in 2000. | David Winston, RH(AHG), and Steven Maimes See book keywords and concepts | I have patients who have had significant recoveries from posttraumatic stress disorder, long-term unresolved grief, depression, and fear. I even know people who would not think of going to see their therapist without first taking this formula. They claim it allows them to feel more deeply, bring up unresolved issues, and to move quickly from sadness, tears, and pain to a place of emotional balance.

Take 4 oz. | | Different types of anxiety disorders include panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and general anxiety disorder. In this last condition, symptoms include constant worrisome thoughts and tensions about everyday life events and activities lasting at least six months. Some of the many physical symptoms of anxiety disorders can include depression, nervousness, fatigue, muscle tension, headaches, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, nightmares, and sweating. | J. Douglas Bremner See book keywords and concepts | These include posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and social phobia as well as the depressed stage of bipolar disorder. Some antidepressants are also approved for smoking cessation and premenstrual syndrome. | Gary Null and Amy McDonald See book keywords and concepts | Anxiety disorders include panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia, as well as other specific phobias. They often co-occur with other mental and/or physical conditions. Although each disorder has a different set of symptoms, common to them all are excessive, irrational fear, and dread. | Dawson Church See book keywords and concepts | These practical techniques have been used successfully to:

Decrease workplace injuries
Reduce anxiety in particularly stressful situations
Eliminate phobias such as fear of public speaking, or heights Reduce PTSD (Post-Traumatic stress disorder) Improve marital relationships Eliminate allergies Alleviate depression

Soul Medicine Institute has also set up the first international database of Energy Psychology case histories. This research tool collects medical and psychiatric diagoses before treatment. | Charles Barber See book keywords and concepts | Group therapy was invented by beleaguered and overwhelmed medical staff and showed great promise for soldiers suffering from what we would now call posttraumatic stress disorder. It is has been suggested that one of the reasons that group therapy worked so well, particularly for British troops, is the manner in which it broke down the hierarchies of military life and the prewar social structure.46 Medical staff rarely wore white coats; patients and staff referred to each other by their first names. | KC Craichy See book keywords and concepts | POST-TRAUMATIC stress disorder CPTSD]
PTSD results from a traumatic event or events and can be severely debilitating. Typically the symptoms of this disorder are related to traumatic experiences originating in childhood, such as sexual, emotional, or physical abuse. They also can be related to the experience of trauma as an adult, such as rape, natural disaster, crime, or war. These traumatic experiences become internalized, remaining forever present and painful. | Kelly Patricia O'Meara See book keywords and concepts | For example, Pfizer—the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Zoloft, one of the SSRI antidepressants listed by the FDA for "black box" warnings—until July 2005 reported on the company's Zoloft website: "Although the way Zoloft works for depression, panic disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Post Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not completely understood, what is understood is that Zoloft is a medicine that helps correct the chemical imbalance of serotonin in the brain... | | According to the PDR, Zoloft, made by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and is "presumed" to do something with the chemicals in the brain and "the efficacy of Zoloft in pediatric patients ages 6-17 with major depressive disorder, panic disorder, PTSD (Post Traumatic stress disorder), PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) or social anxiety disorder has not been established. | Phyllis A. Balch, CNC See book keywords and concepts | Posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a serious illness that needs professional intervention and treatment. To help decide whether you (or a loved one) might have this disorder, the following five questions are important:
1.
Have you ever experienced or witnessed a life-

•
Feeling detached from other people.
Do you reexperience this event in at least one of the

The key sign of PTSD involves mentally reliving past traumatic events in a manner and to an extent that this interferes with normal life. (See Is It Stress or Is It PTSD? on page 721.)
Many people attribute their stress-related symptoms to "nerves," and in fact stress usually does affect the parts of the body that are related to the nervous system first, especially through the digestive organs. | Dr. Jonathan Prousky, BPHE, BSc, ND, FRSH See book keywords and concepts | Anxiety disorders are classified into various categories, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder (PD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social phobia/social anxiety disorder (SAD).3 A brief description of the main types of anxiety disorders is provided in Table 5.
To make an appropriate psychiatric diagnosis, it is necessary that certain criteria be met for the anxiety disorder being considered. | | Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A re-experiencing of symptoms, avoidance, and hyperarousal after exposure to a traumatic event.
5. Social Anxiety Disorder: Patients fear negative evaluations by others or public scrutiny and humiliation. They demonstrate extreme shyness and discomfort in social settings.
Diagnostic Problems
The medical diagnosis of an anxiety disorder can be arbitrary. Two clinicians evaluating the same patient with complaints of anxiety will likely give two different diagnoses. |
